The Debt Monger

Which debt payoff program is worth the money? Prices compared, honestly

By Amanda Monger, who paid off $74,000 of debt in three years. Published September 29, 2026. Not financial advice.

Most people do not need to spend more than $15. The math of paying off debt is the same everywhere: list it, smallest balance first, stop the interest with 0% transfers. What the expensive programs sell is accountability and community. If you want the whole plan in one place, The Debt Free Guide is $14.99 one time. If you want a coach on a call every week, expect $200 to $4,000. Prices below were checked on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

How to pick

  1. If you can follow a written plan: the guide, or the free steps on how to pay off credit card debt without paying for a program. Total cost under $15.
  2. If you need someone to check on you every week: a coaching program, and budget $200 to $4,000. The math they teach is the same.
  3. If you are already behind and creditors are calling: a nonprofit credit counseling plan before any settlement company.
  4. If your credit is good and most of your debt is on cards: the 0% rotation saves more than any program can.

What I would not pay for

A consolidation loan at 27% to "simplify" 24% cards. A settlement company before you have tried counseling. Any program that will not tell you the price before a sales call.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest debt payoff program?

Undebt.it Plus is $10 a year for calculators, and The Debt Free Guide is $14.99 one time for the complete plan plus a tracker. Everything else is $80 to $4,000.

How much does Financial Peace University cost?

$79.99 one time for the standalone course as of September 29, 2026, or $129.99 for the first year of Financial Peace All Access, which then renews at $119.99 a year.

How much do debt settlement companies charge?

Typically 15 to 25% of the debt you enroll, plus small setup and monthly fees, with a $7,500 minimum. Your credit takes a serious hit and forgiven debt can be taxable.

Is a debt coaching program worth $2,000?

Only if you know you will not follow a written plan alone. The payoff math in a $2,400 program is the same as in a $14.99 guide; what you are buying is the weekly accountability.
